Dental hygiene encompasses more than just brushing and flossing your teeth daily.

You should visit your dentist for preventative dental check-ups, and attend regular professional cleanings, at least twice a year.

If you do this, along with practising good home oral care, you can keep your mouth fresh and keep your teeth and gums disease-free.

What happens during a preventative dental check-up?

When you visit your dentist for a check-up, they will inspect your mouth, teeth, and gums for any signs or disease or decay. You may also have x-rays taken.

Why do I need professional teeth cleaning if I brush and floss daily?

It is difficult to remove all stubborn plaque and tartar build-up from hard-to-clean areas between your teeth and gums.

Your hygienist uses special dental instruments to remove build-ups, thoroughly clean in and around each tooth, and help prevent gum disease.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a build-up of plaque bacteria, the same bacteria that causes tooth decay, between the teeth and gum line.

If left untreated, you may develop gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease. Without treatment, gingivitis can morph into a more serious form of gum disease called periodontal disease.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, but it is entirely preventable and even reversible with an effective oral hygiene routine.
