Made from acrylic, nylon or metal, dentures fit over your gums and offset any problems missing teeth can cause such as trouble eating and speaking, shifting of your remaining natural teeth into gaps, and facial sagging.
Modern dentures can be made to look exactly like natural teeth, and can even be secured with dental implants, alleviating common problems such as slipping and clicking.
Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth. This removable appliance encompasses a gum-coloured acrylic plate with prosthetic teeth attached to it. Metal or tooth-coloured clasps hold the denture in position, using a few of your natural teeth as anchor points.
Full dentures are an effective solution when most or all your natural teeth are missing. Full dentures are removable and use suction and an adhesive to remain in place.
In some cases, our patients opt to secure their complete dentures with strategically placed dental implants, providing a more comfortable, stable fit and eliminating the need for an adhesive.
Dentures may feel strange at first and each patient adapts to them differently. Initially you may experience increased saliva, soreness of the mouth and along the gums, and the feeling that your dentures are loose or too big.
To help make your transition to dentures easier choose soft foods, avoid hard or sticky foods, cut your foods into small bites and chew using both sides of your mouth.
Once your facial muscles become acclimatised to dentures you will feel more comfortable wearing and using them.
If possible clean your dentures after every meal to remove food debris and plaque. Always clean your dentures over a towel to avoid breakage if you accidentally drop them. Hold them gently between your thumb and fingers and clean them using a denture brush or soft-bristled brush and a denture cleaner. Rinse in lukewarm water to avoid warping them.
Remove your dentures at night to give your gums a rest. Soak them in a denture solution so they don’t dry out and lose their shape.
Many patients notice that once they get dentures, their ability to eat and speak improves and they can enjoy more of their favourite foods. Facial lines are softened, and their facial structure has more volume, so their appearance is revitalised and more youthful.
