We like to see our patients with healthy smiles, but there are times your dentist will recommend a tooth extraction as a last resort in the event a restorative treatment cannot save your tooth.

Our experienced team can perform extractions quickly, and with local anaesthesia you won’t feel any discomfort.

Why does someone need a tooth extracted?

Several conditions may require a tooth extraction, including:

  • Gum disease
  • Accidents
  • Overcrowding
  • Impacted or partially impacted tooth

How will the dentist extract my tooth?

Your dentist will numb the area and using a pair of forceps gently remove the tooth. Other than a little pressure, you should experience no discomfort.

Sometimes, such as if a tooth has broken off below the gum line and forceps can’t be used, or in the case of an impacted wisdom tooth, an incision may have to be made in the gum so the tooth can be removed. This is known as a surgical extraction and requires a longer recovery period.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket is a condition that occurs when the bone underneath the empty socket is exposed. Normally, a blood clot forms and eventually the area heals and covers the bone. However, sometimes the blood clot dislodges and causes dry socket.

Over-the-counter medicine should manage any discomfort you may feel.

How can I prevent dry socket?

You can stop dry socket from occurring by taking care to ensure the area has a chance to heal. Avoiding hot liquids that might dissolve the blood clot and chewing on the other side of your mouth until the area completely heals can help reduce your risk of dry socket developing. Also, don’t drink through a straw or spit when brushing your teeth to avoid dislodging the blood clot.

How quickly can I return to my normal activities?

The healing process takes a week or two, however you can normally resume many of your activities within 24-48 hours of a simple extraction. Your dentist may suggest you avoid activities for a longer period following a surgical extraction.
