Guided bone regeneration (GBR) restores atrophied bone in your mouth so you have enough bone for an implant.

A GBR uses a barrier membrane to help improve the bone density in the area targeted.
There are two types of GBR: one-stage lateral augmentation and two-stage bone augmentation.

What is one-stage lateral augmentation?

For one-stage lateral augmentation, your dentist places a bone graft over the area, and covers it with a barrier membrane.

The membrane extends 2-3 millimetres on either side of where the dentist will ultimately place the implant.

The membrane must remain in place and stable to achieve results.

What is a two-stage bone augmentation?

Dentists use two-stage augmentations when a patient has a lack of bone due to tooth extraction. The socket is packed with the bone graft material, a barrier membrane is used to cover the graft, and the cavity sutured closed.

How successful are guided bone regenerations?

Studies indicate this procedure has an over 90% success rate.
