Dentists use fillings to replace the interior of your tooth damaged by decay.

Fillings help keep your tooth from decaying further and restore its shape, strength and function.

Do I have to fill a cavity?

Cavities cannot heal themselves. If you do not have the decay removed from the hole, the bacteria will spread and may result in a root canal or even an extraction. A filling is a simple tooth restoration procedure that can be completed in a single dental visit.

How does a dentist apply a filling?

Once the area is numb, your dentist removes the decay and cleans and disinfects the area. The dentist fills the gap in your tooth with amalgam or tooth-coloured composite resin, then cures and polishes the tooth.

Will I need to replace my filling?

Fillings do not last forever, but if you take good care of your teeth and eat a healthy diet, fillings can last up to a decade depending on the material used to fill them.

Teeth clenching and night, time grinding (bruxism) can also impact the longevity of your filling.
