Your have dentist may recommend an inlay or onlay to repair teeth that cavities slightly too large for a standard filling but not big enough for a full dental crown.

What is an inlay?

An inlay sits between the cusps of your teeth over top of the cavity.

What is an onlay?

An onlay is slightly larger than an inlay and extends over one or both cusps. This provides additional support and ensures the entire chewing surface is restored.

What are inlays and onlays made of?

Inlays and onlays are custom-made by a lab from an impression of your mouth. The material used is porcelain and it is made to match the colour of your natural teeth.

How does the dentist fit the inlay or onlay?

Your dentist will first numb the area around your tooth using a local anaesthetic, so you are as comfortable as possible before removing the decayed portion. Your dentist will then take an impression and fill the area with a temporary filling.

During your next visit, the dentist will fit your inlay or onlay and permanently bond it to the tooth.

Is any special maintenance required for the inlay or onlay?

You can brush and floss the inlay or onlay just like you do the rest of your teeth.
