A post placement is when a tooth has been damaged due to injury or decay and requires more than a filling.

Unlike an implant, where a titanium screw is implanted in the jaw to act like the root and hold a bridge or prosthetic tooth in place, dentists use a post placement when the root of the tooth is still healthy.

The dentist puts a small pin, called a post, in the root of the tooth. A crown or bridge is affixed to the post.

Posts are usually recommended when a root canal has been performed but there is not enough of the natural tooth structure remaining to support restoration. Posts are made of metal, and the core or filling is made of amalgam or composites, the same materials used for a regular filling. The core helps strengthen the crown. The post helps keep the core material attached to the crown.

Why do some fractures render the tooth not restorable?

Deep vertical fractures that extend below the gumline can allow bacteria to access the root canal space resulting in infection. Unfortunately, the only alternative is extraction.
